Scribage from 1/23/09

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Today we started out by discussing test taking techniques:
-Always show exactly how you found an extreme (maxima or minima) by physically setting f’(x)=0
We also began work with slope fields.  Slope fields help to determine what the family of curves will look like if the anti-derivative of a differential function is graphed. (f’(x)=2x is the differential [...]

Class 1/14

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

Today (1/14) in class, we reviewed sign charts and what they tell us.
Key concepts include:
* The 2nd derivative gives possible points of inflection
* If f”(c) = 0 then x = c is a possible point of inflection
* If f”(x)>0 then f(x) is concave up, if f”(x)<0 then f(x) is concave down
* Points of inflection = [...]

January 8, 2009: Class Notes

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Today we:

Took our weekly quiz at the start of class
 Played a game in groups of four in which we matched graphs of functions with graphs of their respective derivatives
Began work on our related rates graded group problem set

Homework:

“Clueless” graded work sheet is due next class
It was suggested that we split up the problems on [...]
