Class Notes 3/3
In class today we:
Reviewed Exploration 8-5a
- Try 8-5b again for next class
Looked at visual demonstrations of shapes that are rotated around an axis
Worked on examples 2 and 3 on page 386, example 4 on 388
Discussed “Technique: Volume of a Solid by Plane Slicing” on page 389
• Cut the solid into flat slices, formed either by strips in a rotated region or by planes passed through the solid. Get disks, washers, or slabs whose volumes can be found in terms of the solid’s cross section at sample point(s) (x,y).
• Do geometry to get dV in terms of the sample point(s).
• Do algebra to get dV in terms of one variable
• Do calculus to add up all the dV’s and take the limit (that is, intergrate).
• Check your answers to make sure it’s reasonable.
